About
Dr. Mitchell is a board-certified general surgeon, fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist, international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and perinatal mental health provider (PMH-C).
She graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and completed her surgery residency at Weill Cornell-New York Presbyterian Hospital. Subsequently, she pursued additional speciality training at MD Anderson Cancer Center. For four years, she was a global health scholar at Cornell and served as surgery faculty in Tanzania, East Africa.
Dr. Mitchell is an international expert on breast cancer and lactation. She has been performing breast surgery for nearly twenty years, and is a leader in promoting breast conserving surgery and the psychosocial health of breast cancer survivors. She is frequently invited to speak at the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) annual conference; delivers webinars to colleagues and trainees; serves as a co-principal investigator of the ASBrS Granulomatous Mastitis registry; and, is active as an content expert in developing ASBrS society position statements and clinical pathways.
She has received numerous awards for patient satisfaction and health care advocacy, and has authored multiple textbook chapters as well as over 50 manuscripts in medical journals. She has spoken at over 150 local, national, and international breast conferences. The University of Massachusetts selected her as the lead medical advisor for their Department of Defense (DoD) grant studying breastmilk to predict the future risk of breast cancer.
In addition to her breast surgery work, Dr. Mitchell sees patients daily in her breastfeeding medicine practice and created and maintains the
PhysicianGuidetoBreastfeeding.Org, an evidence-based resource for breastfeeding families and care providers. She has additional certification in perinatal mental health and provides medication management of these conditions.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time at the beach with her family, camping, and reading.
